Working with CompuScholar Quizzes and Tests

Working with CompuScholar Quizzes and Tests

One great thing about most online Learning Management Systems (LMS) is the ability to administer automated quizzes and tests in a variety of ways. CompuScholar courses contain lesson quizzes and chapter tests, and teachers can easily show and hide those assessments with a single mouse click. They can also configure the number of attempts on quizzes and tests in case they want to allow retries.

These highly visible features work well for most teachers, but some may want to make more advanced changes like:

  • Change the display, start/end times or other configuration settings
  • Add entirely new quizzes or tests
  • Add, remove or edit questions on an existing assessment
  • Create customized assessments for students with special needs

Let's explore how you can do each of these things within the CompuScholar system!

Note: this discussion does not apply to homeschool families and individual students, who are enrolled in shared courses without editing capabilities.

Advanced Quiz Configuration Settings

To reach the advanced configuration settings for a particular quiz or test, simply click on the name of the assessment within the chapter. Then, click on the gear icon in the top-right corner and select "Edit Settings". From this configuration page, you can do things like:

  • Change the quiz name
  • Set start/end times to open and close the quiz
  • Select the grading method (highest, average) and number of attempts
  • Adjust the pagination and question layout
  • Configure what information is shown to students during and after the quiz
  • Set a password for quiz access
  • Restrict access based on user profile filters

If you have your own production classroom already configured in CompuScholar's system, try editing one of your quizzes and explore the options on your own!

Adding New Assessments

Working with CompuScholar Quizzes and TestsIf you want to add an entirely new quiz or test, simply navigate to the desired chapter and click "Turn Editing On" in the top-right corner of your course page. Then select "Add an activity or resource" and click the "Quiz" option from the pop-up menu. You will reach the quiz editing screen where you can select the name and other configuration options described above. Don't forget to select a category like "Quizzes" or "Exams" under the "Grade" heading so the new assessment will be managed accordingly in the grade-book!

Modifying Assessment Questions

Whether you have just created a brand-new assessment or have an existing quiz or test that you'd like to tweak, it is possible to add new questions, modify existing questions, or delete questions entirely. Click on the name of the quiz again, click on the gear icon in the top-right corner, and select "Edit Assessment". This will take you to the list of questions where you can re-arrange or edit existing questions, add new questions, or insert questions from the existing question bank. All of our questions are multiple choice, but you will find other types of questions are available if you'd like to get creative.

Customized Assessments for Individual Students

Each quiz or test in our system is course-wide entity that is equally shared by all students. It is possible to create new assessments and then set up access restrictions based on user profile details. However, when dealing with special needs students, teachers often want to do something completely different (like administer via pencil/paper).

The easiest way to create a modified assessment outside of our system is to start with the Answer Key PDF that is linked within each quiz area. You can download that PDF and open it directly in Microsoft Word to convert it to an editable Word document. Then, make any changes you like - adjust the format, add/remove/edit questions, etc. When done, you can manually administer that assessment by printout or any other format that meets the needs of your student.
