Unity Game Programming Migrated to Unity IDE v.2018

We have updated our Unity Game Programming material to reflect the current version of the Unity IDE (version 2018). As part of this upgrade, we have also introduced the previously announced color-syntax highlighting for source code.

The version upgrade means...

  • All course users can access updated Unity IDE installation instructions in the Chapter 1 Activity
  • Users that have already installed an earlier version of the Unity IDE can continue using that earlier version, OR upgrade to the latest version

One of the changes that Unity has made to their development environment for 2018 is replacement of MonoDevelop with the Visual Studio Community code editor. Our course material has been updated to match, with instructional videos and lesson text demonstrating the Visual Studio code editor instead of MonoDevelop.

If you are already using MonoDeveop on version 2017 or earlier of the Unity IDE, you MAY upgrade your Unity IDE installation to more closely match the new course material. If you prefer to stay on your EXISTING version, simply continue using the course as-is, and when you see references to "Visual Studio" as a code editor, you will use MonoDevelop instead. Scripting tasks and concepts are very similar, regardless of the code editor you are using. We may provide a link in some lessons to specific MonoDevelop instructions when there is a relevant difference in the user experience.

Please Contact Us if you have any questions about this upgrade!
